Prof. Dr. Christian Scheideler wins the SIROCCO Prize for Innovation in Distributed Computing.
Since 2009, the SIROCCO Prize for Innovation in Distributed Computing has been presented annually at the conference “International Colloquium on Structural Information and Communication Complexity (SIROCCO)” to an individual (or individuals) who has made significant contributions to the understanding of the relationship between information and efficiency in distributed computing. Prof. Dr. Christian Scheideler, who is the head of the research group “Theory of Distributed Algorithms” at Paderborn University and member of CRC 901, is the sole recipient of the SIROCCO Prize this year. The prize was given to him for his pioneering contributions in the area of robust and efficient overlay networks.
The design and maintenance of overlay networks is one of the most fundamental themes in networking. Many distributed systems today relay on some kind of overlay network connecting its participants. Prof. Scheideler “was among the first to recognize the importance of robustness and self-stabilization in the context of overlay networks”, according to the laudation of the prize, and his research results, which have been published at various highly ranked conferences, have established “rigorous algorithmic foundations for their study”. Besides his research, Prof. Scheideler has also taken leadership roles in some of the main distributed computing conferences. Notably, he was program chair of SIROCCO 2015 and 2020 and is currently the program chair of the International Symposium on Distributed Computing (DISC). Furthermore, he was secretary of the ACM SPAA conference for 8 years and general chair of SPAA for 5 years, and during his service he fundamentally renewed the organizational structure of SPAA.
Prof. Scheideler was a postdoc at the Weizmann Institute in Israel, assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University in the US, and W2-Professor at TU München before he started in 2009 as W3-Professor at Paderborn University. He is (co-author) of more than 150 publications in international conferences and journals and has served on more than 70 program committees of international conferences. His main research areas are distributed algorithms and data structures, communication networks of various types, and programmable matter.
We sincerely congratulate Christian Scheideler for this prestigious award!
