On May 27, 2014, Prof. Dr. Marc Fischlin will give a talk on "How secure are cryptographic standards?".

Abstract:

Technical standards serve the unification of norms and procedures to support interoperarability. Standardization is also common for cryptographic solutions today. Remarkably, though, cryptographic standards are often attributed with the property that they also provide strong security guarantees. The talk revisits this believe, mainly by means of our cryptographic  analysis of OPACITY, a protocol suite which is standardized in ANSI 504-1,  ISO/IEC 24727-6, and follows Special Publication 800-56A of the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
The talk is based on a recent ESORICS 2013 publication about the protocol suite OPACITY and a forthcoming article in the Mitteilungen der DMV about trapdoors in the cryptographic standard SP800-90A.
